Back to Main South Kent School Map

Since its inception in 1986, Brown Gymnasium at South Kent School has been more than just a sports facility; it’s a cornerstone of the campus, witnessing the evolution of South Kent’s athletic programs and becoming a venue for various activities, events, and competitions. As we delve into the history of Brown Gym, we’ll uncover its transformation into a championship arena and a central hub for the South Kent community.

South Kent Basketball found its roots in 1973 when a group of boys, seeking an alternative to hockey, formed a team. Over the years, the team gained popularity, leading to the construction of Brown Gymnasium in 1986. The gym was aptly named after Joseph J. Brown, Jr., a long-serving athletic director, faculty member, and coach at South Kent.  See article on History of Basketball at South Kent and learn more about Coach Chillious and the 5X NEPSAC Championship program.

Since its establishment, Brown Gymnasium has hosted some of the nation’s most talented high school, collegiate, and professional basketball players. Beyond basketball, the facility has become a versatile space, regularly used for indoor activities, yoga, general fitness, strength and weight training, registration day, the harvest auction, alumni weekend, prize day, and more.

Renovations in 2007:

After 34 years of service, Brown Gymnasium underwent a significant renovation in 2007. The scope of the project included resurfacing the basketball court floor, revitalizing the court facility, gym lobby, and weight room with a complete facelift, and fully renovating the lower level and home locker room facilities. These enhancements aimed to improve safety and functionality, ensuring the facility continued to meet the demands of high-performance programs.

2017: A Year of Transformation:

The year 2017 marked a period of buzzing activity at South Kent, with various facility upgrades and campus improvements. Walkways were repaved, and five-foot sidewalks were installed across campus. The lower tennis courts were replaced with green open space for special events and student activities, while the upper tennis courts were resurfaced and transformed into a multi-sport space.

Joseph J. Brown Gymnasium underwent a comprehensive upgrade during this period, receiving fresh paint on the basketball court, new carpet in the lobby, new flooring in the locker rooms, and the installation of air conditioning in the gym. These improvements not only enhanced the aesthetics of the gym but also contributed to the overall comfort and functionality of the facility.

As we reflect on the rich history and continual evolution of Brown Gymnasium, it’s evident that this facility is not just a building; it’s a symbol of South Kent’s commitment to athletic excellence, community engagement, and student well-being.

In 2023, the hallowed halls of Brown Gymnasium reverberated with the triumph of victory as it became the esteemed home of the NEPSAC (New England Preparatory School Athletic Council) basketball champions under long time and esteemed coach, Raphael Chillious. Among the celebrated roster of athletes gracing its courts was the unforgettable presence of Elmarko Jackson, a rising star whose exceptional talent propelled him to become Brown Gym’s first-ever McDonald’s All-American. With his electrifying skills and unwavering determination, Jackson not only led his team to glory but also etched his name in the annals of basketball history. Now, as a standout player for the renowned Kansas Jayhawks, Jackson continues to captivate audiences with his remarkable athleticism and relentless drive, embodying the spirit of excellence that defines Brown Gym’s legacy.
