South Kent School Earth Day Cleanup: A Commitment to Environmental Stewardship


South Kent School students and faculty impressively took over the town of Kent in a town wide cleanup. With a shared commitment to environmental stewardship, individuals dedicated themselves to ensuring that every corner of the campus and surrounding areas received the attention they deserved.

From meticulously clearing litter along roadways to patrolling wooded areas for debris, each participant played a vital role in preserving the natural beauty of the school’s surroundings. Their efforts underscored the importance of community involvement in safeguarding the environment and fostering a culture of sustainability.

Group 1, led by Ms. McCann, Mr. Bliss, and Mr. Sullivan covered the intersection of South Kent Road and Rt. 341 south to the Leonard Pond parking area, and Group 2, with Mr. Brennan, Mr. Johnson, and Mr. Belger, focused efforts on South Kent Road to the old farmhouse on the North Campus.

Group 3, led by Mr. Shelley and Mr. Benz, ventured north from Bull’s Bridge Road to the farm at the North Campus, monitoring the railroad tracks and waterfront of Hatch Pond, and Group 4, under the guidance of Mr. Court and Mr. DeGroat, took Bull’s Bridge Road and Camps Flat Road, extending their reach to Geer Mountain Road.

Group 5, led by Mr. O’Brien and Ms. McEachern and team covered the junction with South Kent Road to Long Mountain Road, and Group 6, headed by Ms. Cohen and Mr. Tyburski, focused their efforts on South Kent Road, south from Long Mountain Road to the Old Oak Tavern.

Meanwhile, Group 7, led by Mr. Hodge and Mr. Carter, took on the task of cleaning up the area surrounding the hockey rink and Bull’s Bridge Road. Their efforts included stream cleanup, perimeter patrols, and addressing litter in the woods behind the dumpster, demonstrating the school’s dedication to environmental conservation.

Group 8, led by Ms. Cassidy and Mr. Marcano, focused on Bull’s Bridge Road and Group 9, led by Mr. Barowski and Ms. Jordan, tackled Spooner Hill Road, northeast from the junction of Spooner Hill Road and Bull’s Bridge.

Group 10, led by Mr. Plouffe and Mr. Chillious, focused on Bulls Bridge Road, east from the sharp corner at the state line to Route 7 and Group 11, with Ms. Borsavage and Mrs. Laundry, took on Schaghticoke Road, north from Bull’s Bridge Road to the Schaghticoke Reservation.

Lastly, Group 12, led by Mrs. Brennan, Mr. Pfeffer, Dr. Dost, and Mr. Whittaker, focused on areas around the maintenance shed and tennis courts and Father Klots led Group 13 oversaw the organization and coordination of the cleanup efforts, ensuring that all groups received support and assistance as needed.

Through their collective action of South Kent students and staff, the Hillside reaffirmed it’s commitment to environmental stewardship and community. The hard work was topped off with a much-deserved thank-you gift from the Kent Conservation Commission and an Earth Day cake, symbolizing the sweet rewards of environmental consciousness as we honor Earth Day.
