After more than a year in the making, six leading men’s preparatory hockey-playing institutions announce the establishment of the Prep Hockey Conference (PHC). Play will begin at the 18U level in the 2021-2022 season, with the potential to grow this to include 16U and 15O in the future.
The institutions are Culver Academies (Culver, Indiana), Mount St. Charles Academy (Woonsocket, Rhode Island), Northwood School (Lake Placid, New York), Shattuck-St. Mary’s School (Fairbault, Minnesota), South Kent School (South Kent, Connecticut), and St. Andrew’s College (Aurora, Ontario).
The league comprises institutions rich in history and tradition with a strong commitment to academic and athletic excellence. They are like-minded in their goals and aspirations for the PHC, focusing on improving the overall student-athlete experience while building rivalries through healthy competition.
The PHC is committed to providing the best possible hockey experience for its players, fans, and stakeholders. The group plans to establish itself as the premiere prep hockey league in North America by setting the highest standards for competitiveness and maintaining a level of institutional investment that demonstrates a significant commitment to its hockey programs and facilities. The goal is to establish relationships within and beyond the hockey world that create a high degree of visibility and positive media exposure for the PHC, its programs, and its players.
South Kent School Director of Hockey Operations Jamie Russell noted, “The best players deserve the best competition. By joining the PHC we are ensuring that SKSA players continue to play to their fullest, showcasing their skill to scouts from the highest levels of the game. We are thrilled to have this opportunity to compete with other top programs in the country, programs who share our passion and dedication to the game,”
South Kent Selects Academy (SKSA) plays the most competitive Tier I Midget schedule, participating in the top tournaments in the northeast and across the country. By enrolling at South Kent School, SKSA players position themselves to make the transition to higher levels upon graduation, including the NCAA, USHL and CHL. South Kent students are receiving college commitments from some of the top academic and Division 1 NCAA schools in the country. In addition, SKSA students regularly receive attention from NHL scouts, are being placed on the NHL Central Scouting List, and are projected as future NHL draft picks.
The schools making up the PHC have agreed to a mutually beneficial governance arrangement as they set out to transform the prep hockey landscape.
