Military Service Record: Bob S. Gilliam III ’64


Bob Gilliam | Robert Skelton Gilliam III, class of 1964 from South Kent School, enlisted in the Marine Corps in November 1966 and rose to the rank of Corporal E-4 before being honorably discharged to attend Officers Candidate School.

As a 2nd Lieutenant, he led a platoon of Marines in Vietnam, was awarded a Bronze Star with Combat “V” for valor, and eventually became Commanding Officer of Company F, 2nd Battalion 4th Marine Regiment. Upon return to the U.S. he was selected as Aide-de-Camp to a Major General. He was subsequently discharged as a Captain O-3 to complete his bachelor’s at Columbia, funded by the G.I. Bill. His book, Navigating with a Few Good Men, about his experience in the Corps is available on Amazon or in the Library of Congress. Below is a picture of him as a 1st Lieutenant while serving as an Aide-de-Camp.

Bob also known as “Gilly” entered South Kent in 1960 where he participated in Hockey, Football, and Crew for four years.  He was also a member of the Glee Club, Roaringhams, Selections, Pigtail, and Yearbook Editor-in-Chief.  Bob graduated Cum Laude and went on to attend Hamilton College.
