Father’s Day is a celebration honoring fathers and father figures, and recognizing their invaluable role in families and society. At South Kent, a school dedicated to fostering excellence in young men, we are proud and grateful for the fathers and father figures in our community who have shaped our lives with their unwavering support, wisdom, and love. These men not only guide and support the students on our campus but also nurture their own children here on the Hillside.

Chief Athletic Officer, Director of Basketball, and Head Prep Basketball Coach, Raphael Chillious has two daughters, Zaya and Mila.
“I wake up every day reminding myself that every young man on campus needs a father figure, both figuratively and literally,” says Raphael. “With that in mind, I do my best to be consistently available, willing to share my life experiences and knowledge and lead by example. I also work with the mindset of, ‘How would I want someone to treat my child if they were away from home?’ That is with love, accountability, and respect.”

The chaplains, or “Fathers” of the Hillside, have played a pivotal role in South Kent’s evolution, offering unwavering support and ensuring the emotional well-being of all students. Much like fathers impart daily wisdom to help their sons navigate life’s challenges, chaplains at South Kent provide pastoral guidance, reinforce culture and values, and help build community on campus.
As we recognize the importance of chaplains and fathers on campus, there are few people who have as great of an impact on South Kent as the School’s chaplain of thirty years, Father Steve Klots.
Father Klots has served as an indelible role model for students from all over the world, helping them integrate into the Hillside community. His influence extends far beyond his formal role as Chaplain, as he is dutifully involved in the everyday lives of the students. He provides support and mentorship, guiding them through their Chaucer Recitations, Assembly presentations, Chapel talks, the jobs program, service trips, athletic competitions (as a cross country coach), classes (as a Humanities faculty member), and so much more.
“Like a good father, I set high standards for them, and I’m going to love them unconditionally whether they meet my standards or if they fall short” shares Father Klots. “Sharing accountability and support is my focus as I help guide and grow these young men.”
Father Klots’ unwavering dedication to the South Kent community has created a nurturing and supportive environment where students thrive. His high standards, coupled with his compassion and support, have helped him build bonds and make a lasting impact. South Kent students never forget the lessons in character that come from working with Father and like many other adults on campus, Father Klots exemplifies the essence of fatherhood, mirroring the care and guidance that every student needs. Our fathers of the Hillside make an indelible mark on the lives of countless young men, preparing them to face the world with confidence, empathy, and a strong sense of integrity.
Father’s Day will always hold a special place at South Kent, thanks to the dedication and support of the Hillside’s male role models. When young men leave South Kent, they enter the world with numerous father figures who will continue to advocate for them throughout their lives so they are prepared to thrive at college and in the future that awaits them.
