In Western New England, South Kent School stands as a beacon for adventure and outdoor sports enthusiasts. South Kent’s mountain biking program, established in 2013, has been at the forefront of promoting this exhilarating sport and became the founding member of the Housatonic Mountain Biking League (HMBL).

Comprising eight prestigious institutions from the region, Salisbury, Hotchkiss, Kent School, Berkshire School, Trinity Pawling, Rumsey Hall, IMS Indian Mountain School, the HMBL provides a platform for riders of all levels, from seasoned competitors to novices, to come together and enjoy the thrill of mountain biking. South Kent School’s commitment to fostering a love for this lifelong sport is evident in its comprehensive program that focuses on both competition and skill development.

The HMBL’s calendar is packed with excitement, with weekly races throughout the fall season. The league championship race serves as the pinnacle event, marking the culmination of an exhilarating season of competition. In the spring, the focus shifts to honing skills, building fitness, and exploring the best trails Southern New England has to offer.

Central to South Kent School’s mountain biking program is its impressive trail system. Partnering with Sinuosity Flowing Trails of Vermont, the school has constructed eight miles of thrilling flow trails on its sprawling 550-acre campus. These trails cater to all skill levels, featuring everything from single-track cross-country routes to intermediate and expert flow trail sections.

Riders at South Kent School can expect an exhilarating mix of terrain, including rustic logging roads, challenging single tracks, and exciting features like log traverses, stream crossings, tabletops, berms, bridges, and rock gardens. Whether you’re a beginner looking to build confidence or an experienced rider seeking a challenge, there’s something for everyone on these trails.

The Housatonic Valley Mountain Biking League Championship race is the highlight of the season, bringing together riders from South Kent School and its fellow league members: Salisbury, Hotchkiss, Kent, Berkshire, Trinity Pawling, Rumsey Hall, and IMS. This event not only showcases the talent and dedication of the riders but also celebrates the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship that defines the HMBL.

South Kent School’s mountain biking program is more than just a competitive sport; it’s a community where students forge lifelong friendships, challenge themselves, and discover the joy of exploring the great outdoors on two wheels. With its commitment to excellence and passion for adventure, South Kent School continues to lead the way in promoting mountain biking in Western New England and beyond.
