History, Opening and Dedication

South Kent Hockey started in 1923 when the school opened. In December 2014, the Admiral James & Sybil Stockdale Arena buzzed with excitement as student-athletes, fans, coaches, teachers, and alumni gathered for its grand opening. The facility, featuring a state-of-the-art ice rink, had been constructed following a dedication ceremony in October. Notable speakers, including American diplomat Dr. Henry A. Kissinger, “We are neighbors from just down the road and we’re very proud of you,” Kissinger had said at the dedication.

The festivities kicked off with an open skate, inviting the entire South Kent School community to experience the magic of the new rink. Then-Head of School, Andrew Vadnais, envisioned this event as a symbol of unity. The community skated to Christmas music, marking a magical opening night that truly captured the essence of the South Kent family.

Inaugural Hockey Game:

The excitement continued as the Varsity Hockey team played their first game at Stockdale Arena, securing a triumphant 3-1 victory against Shepaug Valley School. The arena’s impact on the game was evident, providing a professional-grade facility for athletes to enhance their skills both on and off the ice.

Retired South Kent Chaplain Reverend William Low, along with Andrew Vadnais and Selects Academy at South Kent School Director Devin Rask, performed the ceremonial puck drop. The arena’s significance was underlined as Selects Academy U16 American student-athlete Kyle Warren ‘16 initiated the game with a face-off against a Northwood School opponent.

Honoring a Legacy:

Beyond its state-of-the-art facilities, Stockdale Arena is dedicated to upholding the memories of the past and the legacy within its name. South Kent alumnus Sidney B. Stockdale ‘73 expressed gratitude, stating, “My parents’ story is very powerful and contains important lessons for future leaders of our country. Thank you for keeping their story and the values contained alive.”

Sybil Stockdale, wife of Vice Admiral James Stockdale, played a significant role in advocating for prisoners of war (POWs) during the Vietnam War. Her tireless efforts, alongside other POW wives, brought attention to the mistreatment of American POWs and contributed to increased public awareness and support. The arena not only honors her legacy but serves as a living reminder of resilience, dedication, and the pursuit of excellence.

The Admiral James & Sybil Stockdale Arena at South Kent School is not just a hockey arena; it’s a living legacy, a testament to the school’s commitment to excellence, and a symbol of the enduring impact of those it is named after.
