This month marks the start of one of South Kent School’s most beloved traditions: the Cardinal and Black competitions. Rooted in school history and friendly rivalry, these competitions divide the entire community, including faculty and staff, into two teams—Team Cardinal and Team Black. What follows is a season of exciting events where camaraderie, athleticism, intellect, and school spirit shine.
The Cardinal and Black clubs, established in 1940, were inspired by South Kent’s school colors, which date back to 1923. Each year, these teams battle through a series of athletic contests, challenges, and brain game competitions. While the competition fosters a fierce yet friendly rivalry, it’s also a time-honored tradition that builds a sense of unity, teamwork, and community among students and faculty.
So far this month, we’ve already seen some thrilling competitions, including basketball knockout, pickleball, beach volleyball, and billiards. At present, Team Black holds the lead over Team Cardinal, but with the season still in its early stages, it’s anyone’s game!
Beyond just winning points through games, the clubs also emphasize good deeds and sportsmanship, further cultivating South Kent’s values of community and respect.
As the Cardinal and Black competitions continue throughout the year, the energy on campus only grows. The spirit of healthy competition brings everyone together, strengthening bonds and making lifelong memories. Whether you’re on Team Cardinal or Team Black, the games serve as a testament to the School’s enduring traditions, now entering their 84th year.
Let the best team win!
