Zachary Jones was born on October 18, 2000 in Richmond, VA. Jones graduated from the Hillside in 2018. In his 18U season, Zachary Jones had 8 goals and 37 assists as a defenseman. He would go on to play for the Tri City Storm for a year in the USHL, where he had 7 goals and 45 assists in 56 games played. Because of his steady improvement, Jones earned a scholarship to play collegiate hockey for the University of Massachusetts Amherst Minutemen. Additionally, Jones was drafted 68th overall in the third round of the 2019 NHL Draft to play for the New York Rangers.
As a freshman for UMass Amherst, Zachary Jones made the Hockey East All-Rookie Team, as he was the top scoring rookie defenseman in the league. Jones scored 3 goals and dished out 20 assists in 32 games during his freshman campaign. The following season, Jones was named as a 2020-21 CCM/AHCA Second Team All-American, a Hockey East Second-Team All-Star, and a First Team All-USCHO selection. He was one of eight players to appear in all 29 games, tying for third on the squad in points with 24 on nine goals and 15 assists. Zachary Jones won even more awards, placing second nationally in goals by defensemen, third in points, fifth in goals per-game (.31) and tied for seventh in points per-game (.83).
After signing with the Rangers on April 13, 2021, Jones made his NHL debut with them on April 22 against the Philadelphia Flyers, becoming the 6th Virginian drafted in the NHL and the first from Richmond to play in the NHL. On April 25, 2021, Jones recorded his first NHL point against the Buffalo Sabres. Since then, Zachary Jones has made appearances with both the Hartford Wolfpack, the Rangers affiliate team, and the Rangers.
