Military Roster: Sean McFate ’88

Sean McFate, South Kent School class of ’88, has had a career unlike any other. He served as a paratrooper in the US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, worked as a paramilitary contractor, and operated in the private intelligence sector. His experiences are wide-ranging, including dealings with African warlords, raising armies for U.S. interests, conducting strategic reconnaissance for oil companies, and even preventing a potential genocide in the Rwanda region. Along the way, he earned degrees from Brown, Harvard, and a PhD from the London School of Economics.

Transitioning from these high-stakes roles, McFate has found his true passion in writing, where he blends his real-world experiences into gripping narratives. He writes both non-fiction and fiction, using his novels to explore what he can’t disclose in his factual accounts. His 2016 novel, “Shadow War,” originally intended as a memoir, evolved into a thrilling story centered around Tom Locke, a high-end mercenary embroiled in covert operations in Eastern Ukraine. The book offers a glimpse into the complex world of modern warfare and global politics, drawing from McFate’s own experiences.
