James M. Garnett ’74

James M. Garnett ‘74, and Treasurer of The South Kent School Corporation was a devoted son of South Kent, Jim arrived on the Hillside in the fall of 1970 and soon became  a leader on and off the athletic fields and  Cuyler Rink. Jim was captain of the Varsity Hockey Team and served as Senior Prefect his 6th Form year.

After graduating from South Kent in 1974 and Lake Forest College in 1978, Jim enjoyed an impressive career in the world of Financial Services until he retired from Citigroup as a Managing Director and Head of Global Risk Architecture in 2016.

In 1997, Jim joined the South Kent Board of Trustees and has been a constant presence on the Hillside since. Most recently, he served as our Treasurer, and has been a strong supporter of our School, always focused on what was best for our students, our employees, and our School.

Jim was also a  driving force in the development of our Mental Health and Awareness programming, aimed at educating and supporting all members of our community. As this initiative continues to develop, his impact on the program will be felt for years to come.

A long-time faculty member recently shared with me that Jim has been the one constant since the late 1990’s. Through good times and bad, Jim was ready to serve, and always had the best interest of South Kent at heart. He did this with candor, rigor, and humor. A model to his fellow Trustees.

As a result of his service and dedication to our School, Jim was awarded the Robert J. and Mary Anna MacLean Award, South Kent School’s most distinguished prize in 2019.

Jim will be missed by all and our hearts go out to his family and his dear friends.  Jim leaves behind his wife Margery (Gigi) of more than 41 years, four grown children, and 5 adoring grandchildren. Each will longingly remember their “Grumpa” as they carry him through their lives to come.

Rest in peace, and may perpetual light shine upon him.  Servant, well done.
