The Pigtail: January 2020

February 20, 2024February 20, 2024 by mruppel@bluebaden.com

Greetings from South Kent School

You have been hearing about the exciting things happening on the Hillside, but we would like to hear about YOU!

This quarterly e-newsletter will be a great platform to share all the news pertaining to members of our South Kent family.

Here are just some of the most recent happenings –

Alan Pease ’58

Alan has been working on some “graphic arts doodling”. Here is a piece of work he created including one of his favorite prayers.

Gordon Hayward ’62

Mary and Gordon recently put up a new website about their beautiful gardens in Vermont. Looks like they know what they are doing! Visit their website at Haywardgardens.com.

Class of 1964 Mini Reunion

On October 2 a Raymond chili fest attracted Bill Reed and Malcom Moore from Vermont, and Tony Cao, Peter Keck, Ned Williams, and George Wood, from Massachusetts. This gathering was due to the great suggestion by Tony Cao. “Tony Cao, quiet man in a herd of bellowing buffalo, knew what was needed”.

Doug Denham ’65

We’re very excited to share the news that Doug has written El Eslang y Las Frases Figuradas Del Dialecto Norteamericano (Spanish Edition)

This dictionary is a compilation of thousands of English figures of speech and colloquialisms explained and or given equivalents in Spanish, but with an example or two of their usage in English. Though specifically written for the Spanish-speaking audience, it’s also the perfect book for the bilingual or aspiring bilingual. Instructional as well as an excellent reference. Illustrated with cartoons to engage reader’s interest. Over 500 pages.

David Ward ’65

Congratulations to David on his retirement from the New York City Center after 24 years as Sr. Director of Facilities and Capital Planning. He is enjoying spending time with his family, gardening, as well as volunteering at his church.

Harold Bogle ’70

Trustee Emeritus
Congratulations to Harold for his promotion at Credit-Suisse.

Harold Bogle has been named Vice Chairman, Group Executive Office. He joined the bank in 1981 and has led a number of key product groups in Investment Banking over that time, including as Global Head of Financial Sponsor coverage and Co-Head Equity capital Markets-Europe. In his current role, Harold is a core member of the Operating Committee of the Investment Banking and Capital Markets division. Harold is Chair of the US Investment Banking Committee – Financing, and recently added leadership of the Leveraged Lending Remediation Program and the UHNW Group in IBCM to his responsibilities.

Harold Bogle is also appointed Coverage and Advisory Head responsible for Global Industrials Group, Global Oil & Gas, Ultra High Net Worth, and Corporate Insights.  Harold will also continue as Vice Chairman, Group Executive Office, overseeing a number of IBCM’s vice chairmen.

Tom Richards ’74

Congratulations Tom on your recent invention.

Duracell launched a new battery product Duracell Optimum that contains a new cathode material Tom found a way to stabilize about 9 years ago (it typically takes about this long to introduce a new active material into a battery product !). Tom found a way to decrease the electrochemical potential of the new cathode material so it does not oxidize the aqueous electrolyte used in alkaline batteries. He’s also going to start a collaboration with a professor at Harvard focused on making less expensive but equally or better performing cathode materials.

As Tom recently said in an email to Lawrence Smith, “I’m very proud of this work and grateful for the influence Paul Abbott’s chemistry class at South Kent had on my interest in chemistry and electrochemistry”.

Chris Casey ’85

Chris shared a great photo from his recent visit to the Denhams.

I was in Santa Fe for Thanksgiving and caught up with my old wrestling coach and Spanish teacher, Doug Denham ‘65 and his wife Dee Dee in Albuquerque.  Doug has retired from Albuquerque Academy and just published his dictionary of English slang and phrases for native Spanish speakers.  It’s titled El Eslang y Las Frases Figuradas Del Dialecto Norteamericano and is available on Amazon.

Bharat Mediratta ’88

Trustee
Congratulations to Bharat for his new position at Dropbox.

Bharat Mediratta will take on the role of CTO and SVP, Platform. Bharat has decades of experience as a technical leader at global scale. He was a distinguished engineer at Google for 10+ years, recipient of multiple Founders’ Awards, and responsible for re-architecting Search. He later became co-founder and president of AltSchool, an education tech company. At Dropbox, he’ll oversee our technical infrastructure, ITS, Security, and Intelligence teams. In addition, he’ll lead the teams responsible for our partnership ecosystem, Dropbox Paper, and HelloSign.

Boston Gathering

On October 30th we had a gathering at the Somerset Club hosted by Will Rowe ’88 and Peter Ramsey ’67. It was a wonderful evening attended by different class years including a recent 2019 graduate.
