From classmate and class agent, Peter Thompson ’67 …
I first met Henry when I arrived on campus in September 1964, more than 61 years ago. Henry and I were roommates our Sixth Form year, and that enforced closeness and our shared love for SKS formed the basis for our enduring friendship.
In his quiet way, Henry was a warrior. During the Vietnam War he enlisted in the Army and became a linguist, monitoring North Vietnamese communications and interrogating captured enemy soldiers. He spent the majority of his working life as a financial advisor with the Washington, DC firm of Folger Nolan Fleming Douglas, located at 15th Street and New York Avenue NW just a couple of blocks from the White House. For several years after our retirements, Henry, Paul Giarra ’67, and I would meet every couple of months for lunch or supper. Henry told us he had been diagnosed with ALS during the Summer of 2015, and at the time his doctors gave him a window of five to seven years to live. He became housebound about four years ago, but he beat that prediction by a wide margin. He was a tough guy.
I will miss Henry very much.
Henry’s memorial service will be held beginning at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 13th, at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 3001 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC. A reception will follow the service. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to Peter Thompson ’67 by November 28.
