Students Honor All Souls’ Day with Service and Science

Earth Science students outside the cemetery at St. Andrew’s Church in Kent

South Kent School’s commitment to community service took center stage this week as Ms. Cassidy’s Earth Science class visited St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church cemetery to clean gravestones in preparation for All Souls’ and All Saints’ Day.

The event, inspired by the school’s annual traditions and integrated with the class’s unit on erosion and weathering, gave students hands-on learning as they worked carefully to clean three gravestones belonging to a local family—with the family’s permission.

Before and after the cleaning, students took detailed notes on the gravestones’ condition, bringing a scientific element to the work and deepening their understanding of weathering and erosion. The South Kent community collaborated closely to make this event possible, with support from the school’s soccer team, health center, facilities, and Sage Dining Services providing necessary supplies. The local Kent community was also instrumental, with assistance from Brent Kallstrom, Kent’s Sexton, the Cemetery Commission, and Town Hall staff. All helped to organize the day.

A special thank you goes to Michelle Borsavage for her support and driving assistance. This event highlights South Kent School’s dedication to serving the town of Kent and fostering meaningful community connections.
