South Kent Skiers will focus on technique for competitive skiing along with developing fitness through strength, speed and endurance training at our on campus facilities. Practices are held at Mohawk Mountain Ski Area(link is external). Racers are required to purchase their own equipment.
A South Kent athlete respects the sport, his teammates, opponents, and himself. A thirst for learning about the value of sports and the importance of enjoying every aspect of the experience is crucial to each player's development. South Kent thrives on a challenge. Each boy learns to value the inherent lesson in adversity, while seeking solutions to problems. Athletes must display composure during challenging times in order to succeed, and South Kent athletes are no exception. With a strong sense of community, the ski program looks to provide each student-athlete with the value of competition, the importance of consistent effort, and the love of the sport.
Mohawk Mountain Ski Area
In 1947, Skiing Hall of Fame member, Walt Schoenknecht, created Mohawk Mountain Ski Area amidst the rugged beauty of northwestern Connecticut. In 1948 Walt worked with several local engineers to develop the very first snowmaking system ever used at a resort, the basis for the technology used worldwide today. Mohawk Mountain has remained a family business and a favorite destination for the past 66 years. Mohawk Mountain Ski Area is a private corporation working in partnership with the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection at Mohawk State Park. Mohawk State Forest has cross-country trails for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing at the top of the mountain but are not maintained or connected with the ski area. Access to the state park is obtained off of Rt. 4 in Cornwall.
