NEPSAC Champions

South Kent School’s high performance Prep Basketball program competes in the New England School Athletic Council and New Basketball League.  South Kent is home to one of the most prestigious high school basketball programs in the country, in 2023 won the NEPSAC championship, and gained further distinction by producing its first McDonald’s All American, Elmarko Jackson.

The schedule consists of games in the most premier Prep Basketball leagues and invitational tournaments, making it one of the most competitive in the country. South Kent’s newly renovated basketball and strength and conditioning facilities house daily, in-season, and on-and-off-court training sessions, ensuring every athlete can reach his full potential.

The expert Prep Basketball coaching staff focuses on providing players with maximum opportunities to develop their skills, setting them up for success to play basketball at the collegiate level and beyond. In the past decade, the School has generated countless graduates who have gone on to play at Division I, Division II, and Division III-level colleges.

Furthermore, numerous alumni have also played in professional leagues around the world, as twelve players went on to compete in the NBA. Success in the South Kent basketball program is measured not just in wins but in developing hard-working, mentally and physically tough, selfless young men who have earned the opportunity to compete at the next level.

Setting Standards

Propelling the program into the upper echelons of high school hoops, Coach Raphael Chillious is also the Athletic Director at South Kent, a respected figure within the Kent community and inside national basketball circles.  Coach Chills, as he has known, has been an assistant coach at UConn, Villanova, University of Washington, and other esteemed programs.  This summer he is expected to work with USA Basketball, the NBA, and beyond the US where he supports the growth of basketball beyond our borders.

Chillious’ first term at South Kent School spanned from 2003-2008, during which time he emerged as the architect of the school’s basketball program and the driving force behind its rise to national prominence. Under his leadership, the early Prep Basketball teams achieved national rankings every year, reaching as high as #4 in the ’03-’04 school year. Boasting a remarkable track record, Chillious recruited and developed high-performance talent, with 140 players making it to the college ranks and 21 professional players, including South Kent School greats Jack McClinton ’04, Dorell Wright ’04, Andray Blatche ’05, Isaiah Thomas ’08, and Dion Waiters ’10.

Success in the South Kent basketball program is measured not just in wins but in developing hard-working, mentally and physically tough, selfless young men who have earned the opportunity to compete at the next level.
