Cultural Exchange and Off-Campus Programs
You are here
South Kent School offers interested students many off-campus academic, experiential, and cultural opportunities.
The Czech Student Exchange Program has been in existence between South Kent and a secondary school in the Czech Republic for over nine years. Czech and American students rotate bi-yearly between trips to the Czech Republic and South Kent. Additionally, the international exchange program was extended in 2013 with the arrival of a group of students from Kazakhstan for a two-week cultural exchange trip.
Eligible students in their junior year (Fifth Form) may apply to participate in the High Mountain Institute (“HMI”, formerly known as the Rocky Mountain Semester program) and the Chewonki Semester School (“Chewonki”). These are very competitive half-year programs that combine rigorous honors level and Advanced Placement academics with outdoor experiential learning. HMI is in the Colorado Rockies and Chewonki is on the Maine Seacoast.
Juniors may also join Ocean Classroom’s Semester at Sea program and sail up the Atlantic Coast from the Caribbean to New York City. During the school year, South Kent School offers a 10-day exchange program with a secondary school in Brno, Czech Republic. South Kent School was the first American school to establish a student cultural exchange program with a high school in the Czech Republic. In alternating years, South Kent School sends eight students and two faculty to Brno and hosts a group of students and faculty from Brno. In addition, South Kent School participates in the CIRENAS program in Costa Rica where students engage in intensive environmental and sustainability studies in the Costa Rican rain forest. During the school’s Spring Break, a group of students and faculty journey to the southern US for a week and engage in community service with Habitat for Humanity.
In addition, students may participate in VISIONS Service Adventures. VISIONS community service programs stretch from Alaska, Mississippi, and Montana in the US, to the Caribbean and West Indies to Central and South America, and to Vietnam. These programs focus on ambitious community service, cultural immersion, and adventurous exploration.
