3rd Form Summer Assignment
You are here
Dear Parents and Third Formers:
Welcome to the Third Form!
The Third Form Program is designed to provide a challenging, interdisciplinary, and educational experience for each student. The main focus of our form is The Sense of Place: Community and Belonging. Finding one’s place in his community is the first step of the Hero’s Journey, a theme that will stay with students throughout their entire career at SKS.
Philosophy and Goals:
The Hero’s Journey is a central theme at South Kent. We believe that each boy starts school on his own personal Hero’s Journey. The first step in this journey is finding his place in the community; hence, The Sense of Place: Community and Belonging. The Third Form year is designed to help you find your niche within the SKS community. For many, this year will be your first time away from home. It is a time of self-discovery during which the boys develop into men, both intellectually and socially.
The Academic Program:
The Third Form team is comprised of teachers representing the disciplines of History, English, Technology and Science, Math, and Foreign Language. The Third Form uses an inquiry-based approach to learning. Throughout the year students will work on many skills including leadership, independent thinking and learning, building character and self-reliance.
To the Students:
I am very pleased to welcome you to your Third Form year. Your first year at SKS will be filled with many exciting experiences both inside and outside the classroom. In order to get you into academic mode, you will be required to complete a summer assignment. In order to receive your summer assignments, you will need to set up your SKS email (see below).
In addition, please join the Facebook group, “South Kent Class of 2020.”
Parents, please feel free to join as well! It’s a great way to stay connected and “meet” over the summer! It also becomes a great way to stay connected during the school year.
Student Email Setup:
South Kent School relies upon email for the vast majority of its communication with students and parents. All returning students will keep the email accounts they used last year; please email Mr. Porter (porterd@southkentschool) if you have access issues. All newly enrolled students must set up their South Kent emails prior to their arrival to campus in September. Click HERE for information on how to setup your email.
Course Requests, Scheduling & Books:
Newly enrolled students need to complete a course request form. Click HERE to access your course request form. Once a student has provided me a list of courses, I can begin the scheduling process. In rare circumstances, the schedule may prevent a student from taking a particular class. I will contact students should this issue arise. Students will be issued their eTextbooks and eBooks via the ClassBook.com mobile web app. Orders will be fulfilled during the first week of classes. ClassBook.com provides South Kent students the best, most cost effective, eBook distribution model available.
The School & Travel Calendars:
It is important to begin planning travel to and from South Kent School early, especially for international students. Please note that students are expected to adhere to the school calendar; otherwise there may be academic penalties to consider. Please click HERE for the School & Travel Calendars.
All student forms must be completed PRIOR to a student’s arrival on campus. Medical Forms in particular can be difficult to complete over the course of a couple of months. Student Service Forms can be found on your MyBackPack page by clicking on “My Forms” and Student Health Forms HERE (New Students) or HERE (Returning Students) to begin the process today.
All of the information included in this email, and other important information for the coming school year, can be found on the Parent Resources page of the school's website. Please click HERE to be directed to that webpage.
